Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment involving the insertion of very fine needles into documented acupuncture points or ashi points ( points that indicate a problem and are generally sensitive to pressure) Acupuncture has been used in the healing arts for thousands of years.

Today we use sterile, single use needles. These needles are used to relieve pain by stimulating the body's energy pathways or meridians. Some of these pathways are related to known neural pathways. There are many modern theories as to exactly how acupuncture works - but in Traditional Chinese Medicine the term used and what is being manipulated is Qi. To stimulate, sedate, move, unblock or release stagnation or deficiency of Qi will relieve pain and or stimulate the body areas affected by that problem.

Acupuncture is an effective health treatment and many millions of people around the world have experienced the benefit of acupunture. It is recomended by the World health Organisation as the cost effective treatment for many health conditions.

Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs and herbal formulas have been developed over a documented period of at least 2,000 years. Ancient Chinese texts list herbal formulas for many diseases which are catagorised by the presenting signs and symptoms in a patient, (and patient history) as opposed to just a name of a disease. The symtoms are looked at closely as to how they manifest within that person. Each symptom can relate to an imbalance that may, with the help of herbs and/or acupuncture, be rebalanced.

Herbal formulas are well documented and many clinical trials have been conducted testing the potency, cost effectiveness and efficacy of Chinese herbs. If a person is also taking prescribed medications a drug/herb interaction list can be checked before taking both products. Herbs used in our clinic are TGA approved and we endeavour to make sure there are no endangered species listed or used in the herbal formulas (as approved by the WWF)

Cupping

Cupping is a treatement using the application of glass vacuum cups to the exterior of the skin. This may be done with the cups remaining stationary once placed on the skin - or sliding cupping (oil is used on the skin and the cups are used in a sliding motion to stimulate a larger area ). Cupping may feel intense but is usually pleasant and can help remove stagnation of energy and stimulate the skin and superficial muscles as well as other traditional uses.

Gua Sha

Gua sha is a scraping action, using a smooth edged tool over the skin covering tight muscles, (one form traditionally is a piece of smooth horn).  If stagnation is present, within a few passes of the gua sha instrument ( a porcelain spoon in this case) 'sha' will appear, which resembles pin pricks of pink/red or purple bruising brought up to the surface of the skin. This relieves stagnation within the muscles leaving them more pliable and less tense. The surface bruising usually resolves within a day or two, but in some cases where the stagnation was severe, it may last a few days.

Acupressure, Massage, Bodywork

Acupuressure is stimulation to the acupoints on the body by applying pressure to specific points. These points may relate to the local area that is being treated, or they may be distal points - which means they are being used for their action on another area or function of the body, or to have an action related to the meridian to which they belong. Acupressure can be used to relieve pain and may be incorporated in to a massage. It may also be used for people who have an issue with needles ( although treatment will take longer and is sometimes more uncomfortable than the fine needles).

Massage is included with most acupuncture treatements, but we also have some very experienced massage therapists who are trained in a variety of massage therapies, sports, relaxation, pregnancy, deep tissue, hot stone, tui na and swedish massage.
